ESL PROGRAM

UNYT requires students to provide an appropriate English language certificate as required by the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Youth bylaws with a level of at least B1/B2. Otherwise, UNYT students must attend an English as a Second Language (ESL) program.

Upon demonstration of certified aptitude in a foreign language, UNYT-ESC students are awarded:

Level Credits Introductory (A2)3 2 Intermediate (B1 or B2) 4 Advanced (C1 or C2) 6

Foreign language credits will not be given for English, as the language of instruction at UNYT is English. Language credits will not be given to master a language that is the student’s mother tongue. Students must declare no less than one mother tongue. Bilingual students can declare one of their languages as their mother tongue. The university reserves the right to verify the proficiency of the student’s declared mother tongue. No more than 12 foreign language credits will be calculated towards a student’s graduation degree plan (although it is understood that some majors have fewer than 12 elective credits).

COURSE REGISTRATION AND ADD & DROP PERIOD

Students choose the course of their option with the help of their advisor every semester. In theAdd & Drop period (i.e. the first ten days of the semester): students can add/or drop a course through a form filled out at the Records Office. No request for a drop or add will be accepted after the deadline. Students are advised to plan their course schedule carefully during registration to avoid disappointment, as substitutions (add/drop) are subject to the availability of classes.

GRADE POINT AVERAGE (G.P.A.)

Semester and cumulative grade point averages (G.P.A.), the basis for assessing a student’s academic standing and graduation eligibility, are derived as follows. Each credit is graded “A.” “F” is given a corresponding numerical value called “quality points”. The G.P.A. is determined by dividing the credits grade “A” through “F” into the number of quality points earned. The semester G.P.A. includes just the credits and quality points of that semester. The cumulative G.P.A. is based on the total of all semesters.

For further information, contact the Records Office. The semester and cumulative average of students in the MSc in Law program are rendered in percentages.

ATTENDANCE

Regular attendance and active class participation are essential to the academic process and assessment. No excuse for absence will exempt a student from completion of all assigned work for each class. Students who are absent more than 20% of the total hours of each semester (i.e. 9 hours for a three-credit course; 12 hours for a four-credit course) may be required to withdraw from the course

“INCOMPLETE” GRADES

The “I” (Incomplete) is received at the discretion of the instructor and the request of the student only when the student has completed at least three-quarters of the required work for a course and where a personal emergency prevents the student from finishing the work on schedule. The student must complete the course by the middle of the semester, following the award of an Incomplete grade or the “I” will be converted automatically, without any notification, to an “F”. To request an Incomplete grade, both the instructor and the student fill out the Incomplete Form at the Records Office

EXAMINATIONS AND MAKE-UPEXAMINATIONS

Examinations are required in all courses. Absences from these examinations except for serious reasons are acceptable to the instructor and the Department’s Head or Dean may result in the failure in the course. A student who had severe reasons be absent from a final examination maybe permitted to write a make-up examination only on the recommendation of the instructor and with the permission of the Academic Petitions Committee. A student who wishes to make up an examination must submit the Make-Up Exam Form, signed by their instructor, to the office of the Department Head or Dean within three days of the final examination of the particular course. In such a case, the student is required to pay the make-up exam fee.

GRADE REPORTSAND GRADE CHANGES

Grades are communicated to students at the end of each semester. Grades are not given out over the telephone. All the instructors must submit signed copies of final grades to the Records Office within a week after the end of final examinations. A reported grade may be changed only if a computing or recording error has occurred. The instructor must submit a certification of such error in writing, approved by the Dean, to the Records Office.
